Getting ready events: Retirement party/ Preparando eventos: Fiesta de jubilación

Today we have celebrate a farewell party in my charity for Mae, who has been in charge of the Adult Service for ages (in fact, she is who most time has been here in all the history of this charity... 22 years!).

Though I had experience getting ready events, today I have been able to be more involved in the preparation and in addition to get ready the household and both rooms for dinner, I have been in charge of recording the moving speech from the CEO and 3 beneficiaries of the charity.

Things like this helping people to realize that at the end, in every job or activity, people don't remember you for your brightness but for your smile and because you are always ready to help (linking a good work with taking care of others)... this is what I have learnt  with smiling Mae.

Hoy hemos celebrado una fiesta en mi ONG para despedir a Mae, la persona que más años ha estado trabajando aquí... ¡Nada menos que 22 años hasta su jubilación!

Aunque ya tenía experiencia preparando eventos, esta vez he podido implicarme más en la celebración y además de preparar el menaje y la sala para la cena, me he encargado de grabar la emotiva despedida que le han hecho tanto la directora ejecutiva de la ONG, como muchas de sus compañeras y algunas beneficiarias.

Momentos como éste ayudan a darse cuenta de que al final, en cualquier trabajo o cualquier actividad, la gente no te recuerda por tu lucidez; sino por tu sonrisa y por estar pendiente de los demás haciendo compatible un trabajo bien hecho y la atención a las necesidades del resto... eso hemos aprendido de la sonriente Mae.

New timetable for Into School programme / Nuevo horario en Into School

We have just finished Easter holidays and now my charity is full of people again.

This week English lessons has begun again, and also Adult programmes, but I'm more interested in telling about an update in the Into School programme, which has begin this week also with this new timetable:

Although participants were happy with their English lessons and with one day of lunch and art club together, we have realised that they needed something more. They haven't got school and neither know many people in London, and because of this, they spend a lot of time at home watching TV or doing nothing... we think that they can be involved in their new life if they come here more time to be with other English girls who are their same age... There is our third day with this new timetable, but they told us they are delighted because now they use better their time, studying the language which help them to meet new friends, and also because they are more time with nice people (who don't speak the same first language and for this they need use English all the time). They also like to cook together and learning to manage a short budget and preparing a balanced diet. However, their favourite moment is the new peer mentoring, because they talk with other volunteers who are their same age and for this they feel more confident to ask things of the teens ordinary life in UK.

For me this new timetable is a challenge, because now I want to keep going the rest of my tasks, but also now I'm helping in the new activities like cooking the lunch... it's a goal firstly because I also need to improve my English to explain them how to cook, or encourage them when they find something difficult, but also because our budget is very small (we want to teach them to use more or less the same budget that they find in their homes... what usually is really really small).

Acabamos de terminar las vacaciones de Semana Santa y de nuevo Baytree empieza a llenarse de gente.

Esta semana han comenzado las clases de Inglés y los programas para adultos, pero me interesa más contar una mejora en el programa de Into School, que también ha recomenzado esta semana con un nuevo horario.

Aunque las participantes estaban contentas con sus horas de inglés y con una sesión de manualidades y cocina al día, nos hemos dado cuenta de que al no tener colegio y no conocer gente de Londres, pasaban mucho tiempo en casa viendo series en sus idiomas nativos para pasar el tiempo... esto no es malo, pero pensamos que quizá si venían más tiempo aquí y conocían a niñas del país, podrían adaptarse mucho antes... solo llevamos unos días con el nuevo horario, pero nos han dicho que les encanta porque ahora tienen el tiempo mejor ocupado en aprender el idioma que les va a ayudar a relacionarse con la gente de la ciudad, porque están más tiempo con estas amigas que muchas veces son de lenguas diferentes y por tanto se tienen que esforzar en comunicarse en inglés, y por que aprenden a cocinar y a manejar un presupuesto y una dieta equilibrada. Aunque según cuentan, lo que más les gusta son las nuevas sesiones de tutoría con voluntarias de su edad, dicen que se sienten mejor comprendidas y que se sienten más cómodas para preguntar cosas de la vida diaria de gente adolescente.

Para mí este nuevo horario es un reto también, porque quiero seguir haciendo todas las tareas que tenía anteriormente, pero además les estoy ayudando a preparar la comida y es realmente un reto... pues manejamos como presupuesto cantidades muy reducidas para que sepan cómo trasladarlo luego a sus familias (en las que la mayoría tienen muy pocos ingresos).

Aprendiendo a justificar subvenciones

Desde la semana pasada en mi ONG solo estamos haciendo trabajo de oficina porque las actividades extra escolares terminaron con el fin del trimestre.

Estas dos semanas han sido bastante más relajadas y además de aprovechar para evaluar el curso de cada actividad, he estado ayudando en el departamento de Juventud con varias justificaciones de becas recibidas... me ha gustado mucho porque me he dado cuenta de la importancia de dejar muy bien recogida toda la información de lo que se hace con el dinero recibido, y también porque al grabar y trasladar esa información a nuestros financiadores, he podido darme cuenta de dónde hay que reforzar los programas para que sean más efectivos para el desarrollo de las beneficiarias (por qué algunas personas faltan a menudo, por qué algunas actividades parecen más aburridas cuando en realidad es cuestión de tener todo el material preparado con antelación...).

Además de ayudar a preparar la justificación de las ayudas, hemos estado pensando y mejorando las actividades del último trimestre del año, porque la semana que viene los padres vendrán a registrar a sus hijas en las 3 actividades que más les interese, y queremos tener bien cerrados el número de sesiones, voluntarias que lo impartirán, gestión de los espaciones, etc... ¡estamos muy ilusionadas con el nuevo trimestre!

For the last few days, we are doing many office work because second term has finished and girls are on holidays until a 24th of April.
Last two weeks have been relaxer and in addition to testing each activity, I have been helping in the Youth Department with justification for a couple of grants received... I have liked a lot because now I know how important it's to have evidences of the spending of money, but also I've realized that if I have data update, I can show better what I do and why support my charity is worth. Checking data I have been able to discover where we can improve our projects to support better our girls (why some people don't attend activities? Is it just because of their things or is it because we should improve something? Are activities enjoyed for them? Because sometimes it's not a problem of the activity but to  have everything ready in time).
Appart from help with grants, we have been thinking and improving activities for the last term of the year. The parents will come next week to enroll their children in the 3 activities which they will do in the third term and we want to have everything finish and ready for that moment (how many sessions, who will lead and support each club, where we will do each activity....).
We are really excited with the new term!

Second term is finished / Acabamos el segundo trimestre

We have finished the second term at schools and now we have three weeks of holidays. Although we are working at the office at usual, schools are closed and in my charity there aren't activities for girls until 24th of April.

Seize most of schools are on holidays, today we have gone to the Museum of London with all participants of the Youth activities who have wanted to come: even Into School Project's girls. We have gone by train and before visiting the museum we have had our lunch all together near the museum. This visit has been very rewarding, and it have helped me to think how could I hold the attention of girls with different ages in the same visit (younger are 6 and older 17 year-old).

Now that we haven't got activities for girls on the afternoon, we are updating everything on the office, also we are testing progresses of our girls in the second term and having everything ready for the third term. I think I will have time to study English and speaking with people from this country, and also I want learn more about the policies of British Government for support refugees and immigrants in their integration in this country. 

Esta semana han comenzado las vacaciones de Semana Santa y hasta dentro de 3 semanas no tendremos actividades juveniles en mi ONG.

Aprovechando que la mayoría de los colegios ya están de vacaciones, hoy hemos hecho una visita cultural al Museo de Londres y hemos comido ahí con las niñas, jóvenes del proyecto de IntoSchool y varias voluntarias... ha sido muy enriquecedor, y personalmente me ha ayudado a ver cómo mantener la atención de niñas de diferentes edades en una misma visita (las mas pequeñas tenían 6 años y las mayores 17).

Ahora que no hay actividades por la tarde, vamos a aprovechar para poner al día el trabajo de oficina, evaluar los avances del segundo trimestre y preparar materiales y organización para el tercer trimestre que empezara el 24 de abril. Además creo que tendré tiempo para estudiar más inglés y manejarme cada vez mejor en este idioma, y aprovechare también para seguir conociendo mejor las políticas públicas de ayuda a los inmigrantes y refugiados.
